Proximate Cause

The 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season has officially commenced, and we take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of insurance. This week we present another insurance related term - Proximate cause.

What does this mean for you?

The cause of a loss must be established because you can only be compensated for risks specifically covered by your policy. For example, in the case of homeowner’s insurance, if your policy specifically excludes coverage for land slippage and as a result of heavy rains during a hurricane, you suffer damage to your home from a landslide, while the damage was as a result of the landslip, this event would not have occurred had it not been for the hurricane. Therefore, the hurricane is the proximate cause and so the loss or damage would be covered if hurricane coverage is included in your policy.

Your friends at EC Global Insurance would like to remind you to ensure that your homeowner’s insurance policy is in order and all property valuations are up to date. For further information, call one of our agents at 451-3244 or 456-6270.
